Woods World of Sports Extra: Playoff Clinching Scenarios

Welcome back to the Maverick! I apologize for the lack of recent posts, as I had other fish to fry and rest assured, exciting things are en route, so watch this space. Anyway, I am making this to show how Blackhawk's baseball and softball teams can clinch playoff spots. Things will get complex, so stay tuned.

Baseball

Right now, Blackhawk baseball is at 4-6 in the section, and are tied with Quaker Valley for 3rd. Central Valley and Ambridge are tied for 5th at 3-7, while New Castle is 2-8. Beaver and Montour have clinched their playoff spots already. There are 4 berths out of the section. On Monday, May 9 and Tuesday, May 10, Blackhawk will take on New Castle, Quaker Valley will take on Ambridge, and Beaver will take on Central Valley. To clinch, Blackhawk must:

a) Win both games against New Castle. If they do so, they clinch 3rd in the section and return to the playoffs no matter what.

b) Win 1 game against New Castle. If they do that, they will go to playoffs. In a scenario where QV sweeps Ambridge, no matter the results of the CV-Beaver series, Blackhawk will advance as the 4th place in the section, as the tie that would originate from CV beating Beaver twice would not be broken, and both would advance. If QV would lose at least 1 to Ambridge, Blackhawk would finish 3rd in the section. I have not found any scenarios where Blackhawk would not advance winning 1 game.

If Blackhawk is swept by New Castle, they would be eliminated.

Softball

Softball is 4-6 in section. 1 out of the 4 playoff spots is available, and Blackhawk, New Castle, and Hopewell are fighting for it. New Castle is 4-7 in section, and Hopewell is 3-8. Blackhawk has 2 games to go against Montour and Ambridge, and New Castle and Hopewell are facing each other.

a) If Blackhawk wins both games, they will go to the playoffs no matter what. Hopewell and New Castle would both be mathematically eliminated in this scenario.

b) If Blackhawk were to win 1 game and Hopewell were to win the Hopewell-New Castle game, Blackhawk would advance alone, while if New Castle were to win and Blackhawk were to win 1 game, New Castle and Blackhawk would be tied. The tie would be broken by head-to-head record, and as Blackhawk and New Castle split their series, Blackhawk and New Castle would both advance.

c) If Blackhawk were to win 0 games, the only way for them to advance to the playoffs would be if Hopewell beat New Castle. If that happened, Blackhawk, New Castle, and Hopewell would all be tied at 4-8. Hopewell winning would result in a season series split. As Blackhawk split their season series against Hopewell and New Castle, this would lead to the tied teams going 2-2 against each other overall. This deadlock would mean that all of the teams would go to the playoffs.

Spring sports are coming to a close, and playoff scenarios are as wacky as usual. Let's hope our teams can make it to the playoffs.
